This week, our class had to read pages 28-56 in Night by Elie Wiesel. Just like my last blog post, we have to write about something that struck us. Now, I don't want to sound like a bad person, but I am going to write about another horrible moment in this book. They don't amuse me, they make me feel sad, and it takes a lot to make me sad in a book. But this, this was just horrendous.
In Night, Eliezer and his father are in Auschwitz. Eliezer just got separated from his mother and sisters because men and women had to be separated. An SS officer told them that there is a chimney where they "will be burned! Burned to a cinder! Turned into ashes!" But then, they see flames that were rising from a ditch. They knew something was being burned. they see a huge truck, unloading all of it holds: babies and small children. Oh my goodness, just the thought of that makes me think "what kind of society was this? What is wrong with Hitler." Poor innocent lives were being taken away, just because of that one man.
This reminds me of the shooting at Sandy Hook, about a few Decembers ago. Small, precious lives were gone, thanks to one man, Adam Lanza. It was such a disturbing moment for all of us, even those who never even knew those kids lives even existed. I just cannot even imagine being a parent of either the children of both the Sandy Hook incident or the one during the Holocaust. I will always continue to pray for them.
Night by Elie Wiesel escalated very quikly. One minute he is boy with his friends, the next minute they are in concentration camps being ready to get burned.
