I have decided to post my ending of "The Lady or the Tiger?" by Frank Stockton. I really
The princess walked with her lover until they reached the arena. She clutched his hand and gave his a small kiss on his cheek. The King saw that and refused to let that happen. Anger grew in his eyes and his face turned to red. While holding her lover’s hand she said, “I will not let go. They will have to pry us apart.” As the King heard this, he yelled, “Guards!” The guards came and tore them apart. The Princess’s eyes began to water and the King stood right beside her and whispered straight into her ear, “It was for the best.” The princess looked at him with her heartbroken eyes and declared, “It didn’t have to end this way. There were all the other options in the world and you chose this. You did not have to choose trial! Either way, it is a lose-lose situation for me. If he gets the fair maiden, then he will marry her and will never see me again.” Her father tried to hide a smirk to his face. “And if he gets the tiger, well you know! I just can’t believe you did this. I loved him father! I loved his with all my heart, and he loves me too! I have never loved anyone else like this in my life!” “I know you did, honey.” “Then why did you do it?” she said. The King did not answer. He just looked at her and pointed her to the other direction to their thrones to watch the poor soul’s life changing or life ending decision. She began to sob on her way there.
Right when they got to their monstrous thrones, the Princess asked, “Father, may I please go to the little maidens’ room to freshen up?” Her father looked at her smiled, this time it was a real smile and her said, “Of course! But hurry back it will be starting soon!” The princess nodded and ran down the narrow hallway. On her way there, she came across a door that looked peculiar to her. She had never seen it before. The sign on the door was written in Latin, a language she did not know. It read, Periculum! Sed placerat! Custodes tantum! She thought if it was Latin, it was. She was very rusty at it. She learned it when she was a little girl, like almost 11. She hasn’t spoken it since. She went through the door and she found herself at the beginning at a very long and narrow pathway. She walked down it and found a double door entrance. She entered the doors and saw the fearless tiger behind the left door and the fair lady behind the left door. She remembered which was which and was going to tell her lover to choose the fair maiden because she did not want the love of her life to die. She scurried down the pathway and opened the door. The King saw her come out of the door and knew what she was up to. She came back and sat next to her father in her throne, which was slightly smaller than her father’s, but they were separated by an empty throne. It belonged to her mother who died due to a terrible sickness, with no cure.
She then looked at her dad and gave a slight grin and he gave a phony grin to his daughter. “Excuse me, sweetheart.” The King said. The Princess tried to motion to her lover which door it was but she could not get his attention. She then tried coughing super loud, like she was dying and he looked at her. She jerked her head to the right side. He nodded smiled and winked! The guards saw him do that and made him turn around at once.
The King took out his keys and went into the tiger’s spot. He told the tiger tamer to move him to the other room. “Why your majesty?” He asked. “Because it will make it more entertaining to watch!” “If you say so!” He grabbed the tiger by its rope and gradually led him into the other room. The lady did the same.
It was decision time. The Princess had her fingers crossed as the King came back. “Hey, did I miss anything?” “No. We are just beginning.” She said. “I hope he picks the lady, so he can live!” “I’m pretty sure he will!” The princess said. The princess’s lover chose the door to his right and approached it. He inhaled and exhaled which felt like a full hour. He carefully opened the door and out came a huge ferocious tiger. The tiger looked at him to a second then pounced on him. The lover screamed so loud the whole entire arena got startled. He was trying to fight the tiger, but that made the beast more angry.
Right before the tiger dragged him away, the lover reached deep into his pocket and threw a letter to the princess. He fell to the ground and was dragged away to the tiger's cage. They heard a brutal scream.
The Princess saw the slender piece of paper lying on the ground. She ran to it, flipped it over, and began to sob.
liked this short story! It made me put myself into the Princess' lover's shoes! How scary! So here it is...
